Espresso Elucidations
Latte Art
You've seen them before, and perhaps been amazed as to how it can be done. It's called Latte Art. It's the practice of making designs in the surface of a latte by skillful pouring and manipulation of the steamed milk into the coffee, and sometimes further "etching" of the surface to show lines made up of the dark coffee. Latte art is most commonly seen on a latte (hence the name), although it can also be part of the presentation of a cappuccino, a caffe mocha or even an espresso macchiato.
The typical latte art is in the form of a "rosetta," or flower as shown above. Nice and pretty, but at this point — a bit boring. I've discovered several examples of latte art taken to the "next level." I think you'll find them as stimulating to the eye as the coffee is to the brain. Unless stated, the latte artist is unknown.

Below are two examples of "latte printing" done by a machine using caramel food coloring. Visually interesting and fun,
but let's face it, the artistry of a hand-creation is entirely absent.
Here's a YouTube video showing the construction of the above "Can your latte do this?" design.
Another latte art machine video, showing the construction of a
familiar logo.
More info on Latte Art can be found, naturally, on Wikipedia.
