PODcast Back Issues

Welcome to The PODcast, PodMerchant's newsletter of espresso pod tips, news, education, and deals. Back issues of The PODcast are available online. This newsletter is published in HTML with images and styled text. If you are reading the "text only" version, you are missing much of the content.

This looks like a short newsletter, but I have spent far more time on the content for this than any other issue. The work is not in what you see here, but in the Google Map to which his newsletter is linked. I hope you will find the map interesting.

Espresso Elucidation
PodMerchant's Map of Roasters

Google keeps coming out with great new content capabilities. I have created a map showing the locations of the roasters from whom we buy espresso pods. To get started, click on the map at right to open the map in your web browser. Please refer to this article for a tour of the map and roasters.

Please make sure that the map is displayed in the Hybrid or Satellite view. When you click a link, the map seeks the correct location. Please click on the coffee cup icon for more information about the roaster.

In many cases I was able to pinpoint the roaster's actual building. Proceeding from that level of certainty there are: Group of Buildings, Neighborhood, and Town. Wherever possible, I have used a photograph of the roaster's office building. When not available, I have chosen the brand logo.

Let's begin in Italy. The map should have opened zoomed in on Italia, but if it did not, please adjust the map to zoom in on the Italian peninsula and set to Satellite or Hybrid view.

Starting at the southern tip of Italy, you will find Miscela d'Oro on the coastal city of Messina on Sicilia (Sicily). You can zoom right in and see the actual building.

Heading northwards, we find the Neapolitan coffees Caffe' Gioia, Caffe' Mako, and Izzo Caffe' in the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius. There is a particular tradition regarding roasting in Napoli (Naples) that these three roasters represent.

Next stop is Roma, represented only by Danesi Caffe'. Rome is a huge city but apparently not a big city for roasters. Perhaps the rent is too high.

In central Italy we find Corsini, the producer of the Compagnia dell'Arabica line.

Up in Bologna we find three roasters — Attibassi, Mokarabia, and Segafredo Zanetti. Segafredo has multiple roasting facilities in Italy and throughout the world. The Zanetti family also started Mokarabia. As with Naples, Bologna has a respected tradition of espresso roasting.

In northern Italy, near the base of the Alps, we find Lavazza in the large city of Torino, and Lucaffe' outside of Brescia.

Heading directly east from Lucaffe' we find the boutique roaster Caffe' del Doge. They are in the center of Venice right by the famous Bridge of Rialto. We find the Caffe' del Doge roasting facility in the nearby town of Padova. I suspect this has something to do with the price of real estate in Venice. Hausbrandt is nearby in Nervese della Battaglia.

Our last group of Italian roasters are located in the port city of Trieste, another town with a famous tradition and history of roasting. Trieste is way out on the eastern lip of Italy, on the border of Slovenia. Here we have Amigos Caffe', illy Caffe', and Dock Caffe'.

PodMerchant sells pods from two suppliers located outside of Italy. The first is Espressione of England. Espressione is roasted in Italy in the Neapolitan town of Campagna, Salerno.

Last, but not least, is Aloha Island Coffee from the Big Island of Hawaii. This location marks their plantation in the heart of the Kona district. Unlike most roasters, Aloha Island Coffee grows their own beans. Roasting is performed in Santa Ana, CA.

That wraps up the tour of PodMerchant's roasters. I hope you have enjoyed exploring your favorite brand's home town and office.
